Expressive Series the new Gaggenau wall oven. All you need to know here.

When it comes to luxury kitchen appliances, Gaggenau truly stands in a class of its own. With over 300 years of German engineering, the brand is known for design and performance. Its wall ovens especially the 200 and 400 Series have become favorites in the design world. Architects, chefs, and homeowners rely on them for their quality, durability, and visual impact.
But in 2024, something new quietly emerged and shifted the conversation. At Milan Design Week, Gaggenau introduced a bold evolution: the Expressive Series. This next-generation oven line brings a new look, new interface, and new performance level. It offers more than a refresh it’s a complete rethinking of how we interact with cooking.

The Legacy: Gaggenau 400 Series & 200 Series
In 2013, Gaggenau made a bold move by launching two wall oven series at the same time. Each came with its own distinct design language and installation philosophy. The 200 and 400 Series were first previewed at Eurocucina 2012. They then debuted at LivingKitchen. Both lines set new standards in premium ovens. By using professional kitchens as the design benchmark.
The 400 Series featured a sculptural design with a 47mm protruding front in stainless steel. It used panel-free surfaces, a handleless door, and a bold architectural presence. All models allow for a left or right door hinge. Available in 60 and 76 cm (24 and 30 Inch) widths. Models included convection ovens, combi-steam, espresso, and warming drawers. The side-swing door (also called side-opening door) offered ergonomic access. The unit can be opened manually or with the automatic door opening feature. It made use smooth, even when hands were full. Overall appliance dimensions were designed to create symmetry when installed side by side.
In contrast, the 200 Series focused on quiet integration into cabinetry with flush installation. It offered a minimalist look and came in Gaggenau Anthracite, Metallic, and Silver finishes. The series included convection and steam ovens, espresso machines, and matching warming drawers. With a handleless door, this series was made to blend into its surroundings, not dominate them. Its side-opening door was practical for under-counter or wall installations.
Both lines featured precision controls and a range of advanced heating modes. They also included a pyrolytic self-cleaning system and durable, long-lasting materials. Their distinction came down to presence: the 400 Series stood out; the 200 Series blended in.

The Reveal: Milan 2024
In April 2024, during Milan Design Week, Gaggenau returned to the iconic Villa Necchi with a quiet but powerful statement. Inside the villa’s glass pavilion, the luxury brand hosted a by-invitation-only experience. No photos. No videos. Only a select audience saw a curated glimpse of the future of high-performance kitchen design.
At the center stood a hidden essential induction cooktop. It is a bold new concept anchoring the whole installation. Virtually invisible, it showed Gaggenau’s commitment to tech and architectural purity. More than a product, it was a provocation: a challenge to rethink what a cooking appliance can be. (Not currently available for purchase in the U.S.)
Discreetly positioned in the back, Gaggenau revealed two other major introductions. First, the Expressive Series wall ovens, set to replace the 400 Series by the end of 2025. Second, a new generation of fully integrated refrigerators featuring five climate zones. These refrigerators offer app-based control and refined, furniture-like finishes.
The exhibit, titled “The Elevation of Gravity,” wasn’t just a product launch it was a design manifesto. Gaggenau isn’t merely evolving; it’s redefining the intersection of space, technology, and aesthetic intention. What was shown in Milan wasn’t just new it was visionary.
The New Gaggenau Wall Oven Series: Design and Features
After nearly two decades, Gaggenau unveiled a fully reimagined wall oven line: the Expressive Series. Inspired by Bauhaus and modernist architecture, it blends tradition with bold refinement. Designed by Gaggenau’s in-house team Sven Baacke, Alexander Stuhler, and Soeren Strayle. The series balances clear function with sculptural and elegant form.
The line is set to replace both the 200 and 400 Series by the end of 2025. The Expressive Series will be available in the U.S. starting summer 2025. At its core, this series is about precision, purity, and presence. Minimal material use, cleaner joints, and hand-finished stainless steel signal craftsmanship at the highest level. The hallmark design gesture? The "two frames and a circle" concept two framing glass planes interrupted by a single floating control ring. This interactive detail subtly illuminates and activates as the user approaches, offering a quiet but elevated experience.
Key Features That Define the Expressive Series:
Design Finishes: Glass fronts available in Graphite Grey, Anthracite, or Metallic
Seamless Integration: Handle-less, push-to-open doors that disappear into the architecture
User Interface: Floating metal control ring plus hidden digital display that lights up on approach
Professional Performance: Up to 300°C / 570°F, 19 heating modes, full-surface grill
Fast preheat and automatic programs
Multi-point core temperature probe and integrated rotisserie
Signature Blue Enamel inside every cavity beautiful, recognizable, and durable
Smart Connectivity: Gaggenau Home Connect for remote operation and system integration
Self-Cleaning: Pyrolytic cleaning system
Artisanal Craftsmanship: Chamfered metal edges, brushed by hand, finished to perfection
The Expressive Series includes not only ovens but also combi-steam ovens, combi-microwave ovens, fully automatic espresso machines, and warming drawers. All coordinate in finish, scale, and design language.
This isn’t just a refresh. It’s a reinvention of what a kitchen appliance can be: silent, striking, and smart. In the words of Dr. Peter Goetz, Managing Director of Gaggenau, “The new series epitomizes Gaggenau’s design statement. It embodies a subtle design that becomes sculptural.”
Integration and Kitchen Planning Considerations
Planning a Gaggenau kitchen? The new Expressive Series is made for seamless integration. Appliances can be installed fully flush with cabinetry or with a proud-mounted presentation. Both installation types maintain clean lines and emphasize architectural harmony in the kitchen. The series aligns perfectly with Gaggenau’s coffee machines, steam ovens, and vacuum drawers. Matching finishes and consistent overall appliance dimensions ensure a cohesive appliance wall. Designed for open-plan living, the ovens run with near-silent operation and minimal disturbance. This makes them ideal for kitchens that open into living or dining areas. Oven doors feature automatic opening with a push-to-open system quiet and handle-free. The new cavity design also reduces heat and odor release during cooking. Guests won’t be distracted by fan noise, smoke, or excess kitchen heat. From layout to lifestyle, this series supports modern entertaining and effortless daily use. It’s where thoughtful engineering meets refined, integrated design.
Planning a Gaggenau kitchen with the new Expressive Series but not sure how to achieve the fully flush design? Flush installation requires a cabinet box depth of 627 mm to accommodate the oven. The cabinet must be modified for a flush inset depth of 585 mm (23 1/16"). Plan for a reveal of 1/8" on all four sides of the unit for correct alignment. To calculate width: take appliance width and add (2 × 1/8") for a true flush fit. This ensures clean lines and proper ventilation within built-in cabinetry.

Cost and Positioning
Gaggenau wall ovens are estimated to range between $6,000 and $ 9,000+ similar to the previous 400-series. Price points vary depending on model and finish. This premium reflects not just features but long-term performance, precision, and architectural design.
Planning a double oven setup? Gaggenau doesn’t offer a true double but there is flexibility. You can stack two single ovens or install them side by side for a custom layout. Doing so raises your appliance cost, but allows for a more personal and functional kitchen plan.
Custom millwork may also be required to support a flush installation with minimal reveals. Cabinet boxes often need modification to match Gaggenau’s appliance depth and alignment specs. This adds labor and material costs, especially if shop drawings require tight tolerances. Work with a cabinet fabricator familiar with high-end appliance integration from the start.
Gaggenau pricing reflects more than materials it reflects legacy, engineering, and intent. You’re not just buying an oven. You’re investing in a professional-grade experience.
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
Is the new Gaggenau oven worth the investment? For the right homeowner, the answer is yes. If you value quiet performance, precision cooking, and architectural design it delivers on all three. This oven doesn’t just perform. It creates an experience built around focus, ease, and form. It’s ideal for high-end kitchens or modern transitional homes that prioritize integration and detail. It also holds long-term value. Gaggenau is known to boost resale and signal thoughtful renovation. Whether you install one oven or opt for a custom setup, it becomes a focal point. It pairs beautifully with matching espresso machines, microwaves, steam ovens, and warming drawers. Yes, it requires planning, investment, and millwork coordination but the result speaks for itself. The new Gaggenau wall oven doesn’t just bake. It transforms the kitchen and elevates your home. For those who care about detail, longevity, and impact it’s a design decision you won’t regret.
