Costs for General Contracting Work in NYC

Each kitchen renovation is unique. The condition of your existing space, your building, and the design you’re trying to achieve all influence general contracting costs. Each kitchen renovation is unique. The condition of your space, your building, and the design you’re aiming for all influence general contracting costs. Cosmetic updates are typically the most cost‑effective, while changes to utilities, flooring, or walls increase labor needs. Common cost drivers include: - keeping vs. changing the original footprint - moving plumbing, gas, or electrical lines - installing new flooring - reconfiguring or opening walls - building requirements, protection, and elevator use - contractor experience and craftsmanship Structural work is a major factor. For example, removing or opening a load‑bearing wall in an NYC multi‑story building can add tens of thousands of dollars in labor, plus architectural, engineering, and DOB filing fees. Contractor labor rates also vary widely. In NYC, it’s not unusual for mid‑tier and high‑tier contractors to differ by several hundred dollars per square foot, with some projects ranging from $350 to over $1,000 per square foot depending on complexity and finish level. NYC buildings may also require alteration agreement fees, building management fees, and additional professionals such as architects, expeditors, engineers, or a specialized kitchen system designer. We include this context so you understand that product costs are only one part of a full renovation. A formal design and defined scope are needed to understand the general contracting investment for your specific home.

Ballerina Kitchens are a high-end German Kitchen brand.

This contemporary kitchen is located in an Art Deco residential building in Gramercy Park, New York. The project uses a mid-tier European cabinet system with matte lacquered fronts, split between flat-panel doors and a slim shaker style. Brass handles, fluted wood millwork, Silestone Brass Relish and honed Calacatta Manhattan marble complete the material selection.

As a general guideline, European kitchen cabinet systems typically start around $1,400 per linear foot with standard materials and cabinet configurations. Pricing increases with finishes, storage accessories, cabinet construction and project-specific modifications. More elaborate systems can reach $2,500+ per linear foot. The European cabinetry shown here is estimated at approximately $55,000–$65,000 in 2026. Custom millwork adds another $15,000–$20,000. These figures cover the cabinetry and millwork only. Appliances, countertops, fixtures, delivery, installation and construction are separate.

The kitchen is planned as an L-shape with an island. An existing utility wall sits close to the center of the room and carries building utility lines that serve the larger building structure. It had to remain in place, so the island was designed around it. The column became part of the kitchen instead of being left as an isolated building element. Fluted wood was added to the column and repeated at the curved end of the island. The custom island section also contains hidden storage. A floating wood shelf continues the same millwork detail above.

This use of custom millwork is an important part of the cost of this kitchen. The main cabinetry comes from a European cabinet system, but several pieces were made locally to fit the room and address the existing building conditions. The curved fluted island section, concealed storage and floating shelf account for approximately $15,000–$20,000 of the displayed package.

The Art Deco setting influenced some of these details. The curved island end, vertical fluting and brass hardware refer back to elements commonly found in the building architecture without turning the kitchen into a reproduction of a period kitchen. The cabinet fronts remain simple, and most of the architectural detail is concentrated around the island and column.

Silestone Brass Relish is used for the countertops and island waterfall. Honed Calacatta Manhattan marble is used at the backsplash. At the range wall, the stone wraps the hood and continues into a floating marble shelf with integrated accent lighting. Using two different surface materials also changes the cost structure. The Silestone covers the larger working surfaces, including the waterfall, and the Calacatta Manhattan is concentrated at the backsplash, hood and shelf. The estimated cost for the countertop, waterfall, marble backsplash and floating stone shelf is approximately $27,000–$32,000.

The appliance package includes a 30-inch Wolf dual-fuel range, 36-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator, panel-ready Bosch dishwasher, Bosch microwave drawer and Broan insert hood. Based on the 2026 prices used for this display, the appliance package totals approximately $26,700.

The estimated cost of the full kitchen package shown here is approximately $125,000–$145,000 in 2026. This includes European cabinetry, custom millwork, appliances, countertops, backsplash, sink and faucet. Construction and building-related renovation costs are not included.

Construction costs in New York City depend heavily on the work required outside the kitchen product package. Plumbing and electrical changes, demolition, flooring, wall and ceiling work, permits, building requirements, licensed trades and site conditions all affect the final renovation cost. Manhattan kitchen construction can range from approximately $300 per square foot for relatively straightforward work to $1,000+ per square foot for more involved projects.

The kitchens in the Discovery Room are based on real residential kitchen projects. Each display breaks the kitchen into its individual cost components so you can see where the budget is going and how cabinet, appliance, stone and millwork selections affect the price of the kitchen.
